WHY XANE

A chat can inspire the story. It should not be the only place that remembers it.

Important character details, scene decisions, dialogue, and continuity rules are easy to lose across long conversations and new sessions. Saying something is “locked” is not the same as creating a durable project record.

01

Conversations fade

Preserve important discussions and approved outcomes as searchable project records.

02

Drafts keep changing

Save numbered working revisions and restore earlier versions without erasing later history.

03

Canon needs an owner

AI can propose. Only the writer approves what becomes authoritative.

THE WRITER'S CONTROL ROOM

The manuscript, the conversation, and what the story knows.

One controlled workspace, designed around the project instead of a temporary conversation.

MEMORY / 01

Lock what matters

Attach an approved passage, character fact, scene instruction, or response to the active chapter or project. Readable Markdown lock ledgers keep the memory inspectable outside the application.

DRAFTS / 02

Experiment without sacrificing the original

Copy a Markdown file into the Working Area, save numbered revisions, compare changes, and restore an earlier snapshot. Export only when you choose.

PROTECTION / 03

Quick edits with a safety net

Make a focused correction with checksum conflict protection and an automatic backup before the source is replaced.

CONTEXT / 04

See what the assistant sees

Review the active chapter, approved memory, recent conversation, selected context, and approximate size before relying on a response.

DISCUSSION / 05

Keep conversation beside the work

Use chapter-specific discussions and optional connected AI while XANE remains responsible for validated file and database operations.

HANDOFF / 06

End without losing the path forward

Preserve the conversation, approved locks, pending decisions, action beats, chapter context, and working content for the next session.

WORKFLOW

From Markdown folder to protected writing session.

  1. 01

    Connect your project

Choose the folder containing your Markdown files. XANE indexes the project while leaving ownership with you.

  2. 02

    Choose the active work

Open a chapter for a quick edit or copy it into the Working Area for protected experimentation.

  3. 03

    Discuss and decide

Explore ideas, copy useful material, and approve decisions without treating every model answer as canon.

  4. 04

    Save the session

Preserve locks, pending questions, working content, and the handoff needed for the next session.

WRITER AUTHORITY

The model never receives unrestricted authority over the manuscript. XANE validates and records writer-approved operations.

LOCAL-FIRST BY DESIGN

Your files are not trapped inside the Studio.

XANE Writer Studio runs on your Windows PC. Writing projects remain ordinary folders and Markdown files, while protected working copies, history, lock ledgers, and backups remain inspectable.

ACCURACY NOTE

“Local-first” describes project storage and the application database. Connected AI features require internet access and follow the selected provider's account and terms.

READABLE

Human-readable records

Story memory and lock ledgers remain ordinary Markdown.

PROTECTED

Automatic backups

Direct edits and exports protect the prior source before replacement.

VERIFIED

Conflict protection

XANE refuses silent overwrites when a file changed after it was opened.

RESTORABLE

Revision history

Restore an earlier revision without deleting the revisions that followed it.

INSPECTABLE

Visible activity

Review significant locks, revisions, exports, and recovery events.

PORTABLE

Your project location

You choose where manuscript folders live and how they are backed up.

FAQ

Clear boundaries before release.

Does XANE Writer Studio write my project for me?

No. It is a writer-controlled workspace for organizing manuscript files, conversations, revisions, context, and approved story decisions. AI can help discuss or propose material, but the writer remains the authority.

Where are my writing files stored?

In the folder you choose. XANE works with ordinary Markdown files and stores its protected working information alongside the project where appropriate. Its application database is stored locally on the installed Windows account.

Do I need to host a server?

No. The personal Windows edition runs locally. Each installation can manage separate projects without connecting to another XANE installation.

Does XANE require an internet connection?

Project browsing, editing, revision history, locks, and other local workspace functions do not require a hosted XANE service. Connected Codex or external AI features require internet access.

Can AI directly change my manuscript?

No model is given unrestricted authority to alter the manuscript. Changes flow through writer-visible actions, validation, conflict checks, backups, and explicit approval.

What file formats are supported?

The initial workflow is built around Markdown (.md) writing projects. Additional formats will only be listed after they are implemented and tested.

Is it available for macOS or Linux?

The initial packaged release is planned for 64-bit Windows. Other platforms are not being promised yet.

Is a ChatGPT or Codex account included?

No separate AI service is included. Connected AI access uses the supported account or provider configuration documented for the release.

STORY CORE READY

Keep the manuscript local, the decisions durable, and the writer in control.
